Why a Professional Installation Matters

Charging an EV from a standard 13A socket is slow (typically 8–12 hours for a partial charge), puts continuous strain on wiring not designed for sustained high loads, and can overheat — creating a genuine fire risk. This method is intended as emergency use only.

An EV charger draws significant power (up to 32A continuously). If your electrical supply or consumer unit can't handle the additional load, installing a charger without proper assessment can cause circuit breakers to trip, damage to your main fuse, or overloading of the supply cable.

Incorrect installation — including inadequate cable sizing, missing earth bonding, or improper RCD protection — can void your charger's warranty, your home insurance, and create a safety hazard. EV charger installation is notifiable work under Part P Building Regulations.

Charger Types — Most domestic installations use a 7kW (32A, single-phase) charger, which is the fastest option on a standard UK single-phase supply. If your property has a three-phase supply, we can install 11kW or 22kW chargers for significantly faster charging.

Cable Sizing — A 7kW charger requires a minimum 6mm² cable for runs up to 25 metres, or 10mm² for longer distances. We calculate voltage drop and use SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) cable for external runs to ensure durability and compliance.

Protection Devices — EV chargers require a dedicated circuit with an appropriately rated MCB or RCBO and a Type A RCD (or Type B for certain charger models). We specify the correct protection based on the charger manufacturer's requirements.

Earthing — If your property uses a PME (Protective Multiple Earthing) supply — which is common in the UK — additional earth rod installation may be required for the EV charger circuit. We assess this during the survey and include it in our quote if needed.

Smart Features — Modern EV chargers offer app-based control, scheduled charging to take advantage of off-peak electricity rates, solar diversion (with compatible inverters), load balancing, and energy usage monitoring. We set up all smart features during installation.

Can my home electrical supply handle an EV charger?

In most cases, yes. We carry out a full electrical survey to check your supply capacity, consumer unit, and earthing arrangement. If an upgrade is needed, we'll advise you clearly before proceeding.

How long does EV charger installation take?

A typical installation takes 3–5 hours, depending on the charger location, cable run length, and any additional electrical work required.

Do I need planning permission for an EV charger?

Yes. Chargers like the Zappi can divert surplus solar energy to your EV, reducing charging costs to near zero on sunny days. We install and configure solar-compatible chargers.

What about the government grant?

The EV chargepoint grant provides up to £350 towards installation for eligible properties (including rental properties and flats). We can check eligibility and handle the paperwork.

Can I have a charger installed if I park on the street?

If you have a driveway or dedicated parking space, a wall-mounted charger is the best option. For street parking, solutions exist but require additional planning. Contact us to discuss your situation.
